A Message to Families on the First Day of School from Chancellor David C. Banks
Education Sciences An Open Access Journal from MDPI
As cultures began to extend their knowledge beyond skills that could be readily learned through imitation, formal education developed. After the public school system was widely developed beginning in the 19th century, alternative education developed in part as a reaction to perceived limitations and failings of traditional education. A broad range of educational approaches emerged, including alternative schools, self learning, homeschooling, and unschooling. Example alternative schools include Montessori schools, Waldorf schools , Friends schools, Sands School, Summerhill School, Walden’s Path, The Peepal Grove School, Sudbury Valley School, Krishnamurti schools, and open classroom schools.
Safeguard and strengthen public education through collective action, advocacy, and policy change. Institutional racism prevents students from getting the opportunities they deserve. See how you can bring racial and social justice into our schools and transform our communities. Students have a right to a safe, welcoming, and affirming learning environment in a school that respects and values them and is free of bias. Learn about issues affecting our students and how you can help students succeed. Help secure our victories from the last two years by supporting candidates who will fight for public schools.
